U-534 / U-boat Story /
U-534 was a German World War 2 type IXC/40, long range submarine (Unterseeboot), capable of carrying up to 22 torpedoes and crew of 52. It was commissioned in December 1942 under command of Herbert Nollau into 4th U-flotilla based at Stettin (built by Deutsche Werft Hamburg, laid down 20 February 1942, launched 23 September 1942). U-534 was not assigned to combat and never attacked a ship. Main task of U-boats in Battle of Atlantic was destroying Allied ships, U-534 played different role. It started weather reporting duties south of Greenland in May 1944 what was vital in planning military operations. It was sunk by an Allied Liberator on 5 May 1945.
