Bugman's Raid #1 / Setting the scene /

Story of this Warhammer diorama is happening in the underworld of Rat-Men, known as Skaven and halls of mine dwelling Dwarfs. Two races digging tunnels, building under-strongholds, fighting for territory or survival, stand against each other once again, this time at Joseph Bugman's. Skaven warlock engineer Ratchitt with Rat Lord Trikk Greybeard broken into establishment using force of Warp Stone, blowing  up wall, through secretly made tunnel straight in. Famous Pub has famous ALE, valuable stock among many races, the barrel is clearly an objective of this raid. Dwarfs will fight bravely for barrel of high percentage alcohol, some even may go berserk swinging their axes with deadly force and precision. Two Rat Ogres lead by Master Moulder, Skreet Verminkin, secured the advantage of surprise and numbers ...

Figures for this diorama were picked out of Battle for Skull Pass and The Island of Blood Warhammer starter sets. Warlock Ratchitt, Rat Ogres, Master Moulder & Warp Gun team were from Island of Blood, three dwarf characters from Battle for Skull Pass - Trollslayer, commander of Thunderers & commander of Warriors. One of two special figures for this diorama was acquired while visiting Warhammer World and Bugman's Bar, where exclusive only to the bar, Joseph Bugman was available. Other special figure, Skaven Warlord was available at Games Day 2011.

Having picked all suitable models I could start setting up the scene. This diorama could not be small having 11 characters involved. Each character has something to do, to keep action or a tension on. Many combinations were tried, final one has determined size of the base to 8" x 8". Plenty of space for each character and interaction. As the story has it, drinking party of Joseph Bugman, owner of famous establishment, was celebrating with his mates latest exploits, when party was taken by surprise by raiding group of Skaven. Skaven party of seven, Warlock, Rat Lord, Warp Gun team, Master Moulder and his two pets. Dwarfs being in force of four, Joseph Bugman, Trollslayer, Master Thunderer and Commander of Warriors, defend precious barrel.

To create base I used modeling polystyrene sheet cut to size, fitted with two columns representing remains of former wall. Base has two levels, higher ground occupied by Skaven at rear between columns which were cut down to flush with edges of the base, also concave shape cut out to imitate blast radius. Web of cracks, chips and dents were made using hobby knife and modeling tool. Modeling polystyrene is perfect for this purpose, soft and easy to cut and form. Lower ground is being taken by angered by surprise dwarfs.

Due to the explosion of Warp Stone Fire mid section of diorama is full of rubble, broken stone and dust. Citadel Modeling Sand, Slate, fine Buff were applied with broken tile pieces as medium & large size rubble. Front section is to be floor of a pub, to recreate stone pattern, three textured plastic sheets were fixed to base using PVA glue. Next, edging was prepared using 1,5 mm card, with coverage including columns at rear, fixed with contact adhesive, Timebond.  This glue melts into polystyrene. To have permanent bond both poly and edging need to have glue applied, left out for few seconds to dry out then joined together.

Before fixing plastic sheets to the base small pattern was cut out for original Bugman's figure base - tiled floor with spilled drink, it has different pattern, which was fitted to texture of plastic sheets and simply slotted in. There would be no way of using this bit anywhere else in my  other builds, may as well get used. one of the details that makes whole floor even more interesting. In terms of additional detail, at least in early phase, I've built 2 standards with war trophies spiked on - giant's head (my third approach towards painting this monster's face, Games Workshop's Giant Kit, with four different heads available) and orc head. Standards were picked from Warriors of Chaos kit and Beastmen. Both fixed on wooden cocktail stick, broken in mid section, to replicate possible damage to the posts by blast from the dark ...

Tamiya's Light Grey Primer was used to seal everything together, making neutral tone to start painting. Tamiya's X18, Semi Gloss Black followed on all edges and in all terrain recesses. When completely dry, black color has been masked off for further terrain airbrushing. German Grey XF63 was used on walls (or rather it's remains), XF52 Flat Earth & XF57 Buff for ground colors. Front section of diorama, the tiled floor, had Citadel washes Nuln Oil and Seraphim Sephia applied randomly, followed by thin, uneven coat of XF66 Light grey, what makes previously applied washes to show through, changing rather dull, single color area.
