Messersmitt Bf 109 E- 4 #1 / The Assembly /

Me 109 is one of the most (in)famous aircraft of all times, German fighter first time taken up to skies in 1935. Me 109 proved to have no match during campaigns in Poland, France and low countries. It's reputation changed after encountering British fighters during Battle of Britain in summer 1940 - Spitfires & Hurricanes (still on my list to do, in 1:72 from Airfix, and in 1:33 from Modelik).

I picked a model of Me 109 E - 4 from Airfix, in 1:72 scale. It is my first kit from this manufacturer, I heard mixed opinions about the quality, but I am quite surprised by crisp & sharp detail and generally model itself for such low price. Within the kit are provided 2 light grey frames with quite a number of components, assembly instructions and sheet of decals with only one set of markings - to represent aircraft flown by Franz von Werra from August 1940. Kit also features open engine panel (with engine block), rotating propellers, 3 piece canopy with open/close option and separate wing flaps.

Assembly started with painting cockpit components and cockpit section inside fuselage panels. I used mix of Space Wolves Grey and Catachan Green for color suggested - Slate Grey (Humbrol 31). Overall fitting of this model is great, there is almost no flash, no need for extensive cleaning either. Fuselage and wings went together very smoothly, fitting was very tight and accurate Top engine panel is removable, with engine block displayed, will not be permanently fixed to rest of the model, this may be a good start for some sort of airfield based diorama (got staff & ground crew after all).

As well as engine cover bottom panel of cooler intake can be removed. It slots in perfectly, does not require using any glue or blu tac to stay in one place. That gives access to propeller axle slot, so spinner can be added up in later time, even after fuselage painting. Assembly instructions suggest fixing spinner and propellers at early stage, in this case I tried to avoid any possible damage done by handling, model is quite small and fragile after all. Landing gear has been attached temporarily to keep the model off the ground, small bits & bobs still need to be done. All remaining parts will be painted with brush and added up after camouflage is applied. For now cockpit was masked off & model is ready for first coat of base color.
