Albatros D. III was single seater, biplane fighter of wooden - plywood and canvas construction. 38 units were bought by Polish Army from Osterreichische Fleugzaugfabrik AG (Oeffag). From 1919 serving in Polish 7th Kościuszko Squadron and 2nd Wielkopolski Squadron. In 1920, during Polish - Soviet war, Albatros was used to support ground units. Major pilot Cedric E. FauntleRoy (pictured, source: Wojtek Matusiak, "303 Squadron, The Complete Illustrated History, vol. 1", Red Kite, Surrey 2014, p.24) was commander of 7th "Kościuszko" Squadron, which consisted mostly of American pilots. This model represents his aircraft from 1919 - 1920 period.
Model comes from 9/1996 issue of Mały Modelarz. It is another come back to the old kit which I failed back in the last century, this time with more success. For first glance it seems to be quite simple model, but there were some issues with fitting. Internal ribs were too large, required a lot of sanding down to correct shape. Tail section of the fuselage was extremely difficult to shape as first rib is round and second almost square. This transition caused certain rippling of card, which luckily is well hidden.
